Does Theming on a Coaster Matter?

For this edition of the Weekly Topic, News Plus Notes asked: Does theming on a coaster matter?

Simply put, yes. To me, theming can make a not so great ride into a great experience. Take for example Big Thunder Mountain Railroad found at Disney parks worldwide. The actual ride itself is not that amazing, a couple of tight turns and some nice hills. In reality the ride is not that thrilling.

What makes the ride is the theming. The sensation of flying by rocks and shooting through tunnels is what is great about the ride. The overall experience is greatly improved just by adding some rocks and tunnels.

The mine aspect of the ride also adds to the experience. The storyline of a coaster makes it much more interesting. Slicing your way through a rocky terrain is fun, but seeing lanterns and mining equipment is what transports you. When you go to a theme park, you look for an experience that is different from your everyday life. Steel over a parking lot isn’t exactly that experience you are looking for. Sure, many people just want the big thrills, but I prefer to be transported and theming is what makes that possible.
