NYC Trip PTR

So when I was home in NY for Christmas I got the chance to take the train into New York City for a day and spend the day exploring.......... and taking pictures for the blog.

Fancy McDonalds Sign

Ripleys Believe It Or Not Museum, a relatively new edition to NY's lineup of attractions. I have been to a lot of Ripley's (Key West, Niagra Falls, Wisconsin Dells, Hollywood) and I can say the NY location is easily the best I've been to.

Entrance

Robert Wadlow, Tallest Man Ever, Ripleys Museum Staple.

Cow With Extra Leg

Beautiful Wooden Car/Boat

Worlds Fattest Man

See The Smile On My Face, There's A Reason For It. Whenever Someone Sits On The Couch (An Obvious Photo Spot) A Speaker Implanted In The Couch Made A Loud Farting Noise And The Moose Above The Couch Would Move. Pretty Funny.

This Was My Favorite Gag In The Place. Those Two Wax Figures Of People Pretending To Take A Picture, Is Placed Right On The Other Side Of A Doorway, So That People Walking Towards The Next Room Would Pause & Stand Still Not To Interupt The Folks Taking The Picture......... Until They Realized It Was A Hoax. Worked On Everyone That Passed Through The Door, Including Yours Truly.

These Two Cool Animatronics Were Located Right By The Entrance & Would Sing Along To Modern Songs Played, It Was Funny Because It Was All Modern Songs Like Akon etc...

Me & Dad Posing With "Enigma" A Sideshow Freak Who Was Doing Shows Hourly At The Ripleys Museum.

A Beautiful Sight To Myself & All My Fellow Yankee Fans. This Modells (Local Sporting Goods Store) Was Literally Half Yankee Shirt Jerseys. And Yes, Of Course I Picked Up The New CC.

Times Square On The Gloomy Day

This Is One Of Those "Only In NYC" Type Of Things. A Set Of Highly Themed Bathrooms In The Heart Of Times Square Complete With Custom Made Charmin Bathroom Theme Music.

Another 5 Blocks, Another Icon.

"The Cube" Apple Store, Very Popular.

Greeter Outside FAO Schwartz.

The Muppet Whatnot Workshop Inside FAO. It Was Very Cool, You Got To Pick Your Own Muppet Parts (Head, Nose, Eyes, Body) & They Would Build It For Ya. Very Cool, But Pricey At Over A Hundred Bucks.

It Was A Busy Day In NYC.

Last Pic, The Worlds Most Famous Christmas Tree.

I Hope You Guys Enjoyed The Pictures, It Was A Fun Day!!

Christmas In My Apartment

So I am putting away my Christmas stuff this weekend. I don't have too much, but I'm a single guy that lives alone, so what do you expect. The one tree has fiber optics in it and is pretty sweet and of course I love the WDW ornaments.

Season 3: Episode 49 a bit delayed

Hey Everyone,

If you were checking your iTunes paitently waiting for A Walk In The Park Podcast Season 3: Episode 49 to pop up, your going to have to wait a bit longer. The file conversion process took longer then I had expected so I couldn't post the show last tonight. Tonight is New Years Eve, so clearly I'm busy with things far more important then podcasting, so be on the look out for the show sometime Thursday.

I am going to get back in the blogging biz, next week I swear, things have just been crazy with the holidays.

Merry Christmas

I just wanted to take a minute out of my holiday and wish all the readers of the blog a Merry Christmas. I am back in NY, spending time with family (which explains the lack of updates this week). I of course watched the WDW Christmas parade this morning as always. I am hoping to get to NYC on Saturday and could bring back some good stuff for the blog.

MouseFest PTR

So last weekend I had the oppurtunity to experiance my very first MouseFest. I had really high expectations for the event, because it was talked about in such high regard from all the big Disney websites & podcasts, the event not only lived up to the hype, it exceeded it. I had an absolute blast, met sooooo many people, made a lot of friends and had a time I will remember for a while.

I arrived in the Orlando Airport right on time and hopped on the Magical Express bus to Disney property. Check In at the Carribean Beach resort was very slow, probably due to the fact that all the cast members working the desks were members of the international program. I like the fact that the CM's you meet are from everywhere, but they should really spread them out more cause they are far slower then the regulars. If there was one part of the trip I wasn't thrilled about it was staying at the Carribean Beach Resort. The place although very well themed, was just too big. You had to get on a internal bus system to get from check in to your room or your room to the food court, I didn't like this at all. I won't be staying there again for a long time.

I had a little bit of time so I headed over to Downtown Disney. Of course because I wanted to punish myself, I had to walk past the closed Adventurers Club.

Sad, indeed. I did grab a drink at the outdoor bar across the street from the Adv Club, but unfortunately they weren't serving the Kungaloosh that night. I did ask the bartender and she said they do serve the Adv Club concoction, but only one bartender knows how to make it.

With drink in hand I explored the rest of Downtown Disney. I checked out the T Rex Cafe, which was neat, but I think the pictures I have seen make it look cooler then it was. The highlight of DTD for me now that the clubs are closed is the massive World Of Disney Store. I perused for a while and ended up buying a set of 8 action figures (because I'm a huge dork) which features different characters from the famous attractions like Figment & Big Al. I also noticed they had started construction on "Characters In Flight" the large balloon ride being built near the west entrance to Pleasure Island.

But it was off to bed early, because there was Extra Magic Hours at the Magic Kingdom at 8 AM. The MouseFest activities didn't really get going until after lunch, so I spent the morning exploring MK. Here are some thoughts from that:

- Space Mountain is stuck in 1981
- The pirate who used to wear about 5-6 hats..... now doesn't
- The Haunted Mansion upgrades are still great
- I saw a giant Florida bird swoop down and steal a mans churro, one of the funniest/oddest things I ever seen in WDW

I was only in the Magic Kingdom for about two hours before hopping on the monorail to the Polynesian to grab my favorite breakfast treat in Disney World, which is of course TONGA TOAST

If you've never experianced Tonga Toast, its deep fried sourdough bread with bananas inside and topped with powdered sugar. While it is a 'Brick Of Death' it is delicous. If you've never been to the Poly, its one of the best Disney resort, this is the lobby:

After breakfast I moved one stop over on the monorail to check out the christmas decor at the Grand Floridian. Which like the Poly is another beautiful Disney property:

The star of the holiday festivities at the Grand Flo is of course the life size gingerbread house. This is very cool and actually has a shop inside it where you can buy cookies.

Soon after that it was time to head over to the Contemporary to start MouseFest!! Walking around the Contemporary I found this sweet baseball themed skeeball machine:

Then it was time for MouseFest 101 which was a talk given by Mark Goldhaber of MousePlanet and Mike Scopa from WDW Today. They talked about the history of the event, some of the big meets, and some tips for those that haven't been before. Then MouseFest founder Dave Marx from Passporter officially welcomed everyone to MouseFest and we all enjoyed a nice spread of snacks.

The talks were very good, but there wasn't too much time to socialize before it was back to the Magic Kingdom for Mike Scopa's annual Dole Whip Meet. This was one of the more popular meets and had some cool swag that came along with it. That was one of the neat things about MouseFest, each meet you went to the host would give out a pin to hang on your lanyard and by the end of the weekend there wasn't much room left on the lanyards. Shortly after the Dole Whip, I went to the Monsters Inc Laugh Floor (MILF for short) for the Comedy4Cast meet. This was one of the more fun meets because the host gave all that attended Groucho Marx goofy glasses, here is a picture of the group:

We got on the big screen during the show as a group and had a blast. I ate dinner at Pecos Bills (home to the famous fixins bar). Shortly after nightfall it was time for Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party. Now not only was this my first time at MouseFest, but it was also my first time at WDW during Christmastime. I really enjoyed all the Christmas things I saw during my visit and I think those during the party were the most well done, as a big part of a day at the Magic Kingdom is that 'Warm & Fuzzy' feeling and that only is amplified with all the extra Christmas activities going on. The most obvious decoration is the lit up Cinderella Castle:

While this may seem great in pictures or youtube videos, it really needs to be seen to be believed, it's a breathtaking sight. I really enjoyed the two live stage shows during the party, both were well done. I was a little let down by the parade, as I had sky high expectations after the awesome Boo To You parade during the halloween party. The highlight of the night had to be Holiday Wishes fireworks spectactular. It was a great show and mixed with the snow on main street made for a great time. The party also included complimentarty cookies and hot chocolate, I didn't care much for the cookies but LOVED the hot Cocoa.

The next morning began with a few hours at Disney's Animal Kingdom. I grabbed a fastpass for Everest and then headed to Africa to grab a delicous pastry and head off to the all ears meet. The All Ears meet had some of the best swag in the weekend including change purses, hats and buttons. The Everest meet was very popular, us MouseFesters took up I think somewhere between 3-4 full trains. Yeti is still in B show for those wondering. I grabbed rides on other DAK classics Kilamanjaro Safari's & Dinosaur before heading to the Studios for the afternoon.

I got to the studios a little bit earlier with hopes to grab a fastpass for Toy Story Mania, but it was a popular day and they were all gone by the time I got there around noon. After lunch the MouseFest gang filled 1.5 starspeeders at Matt Hotchberg's Star Tours meet. I got the whole Muppetvision experiance at MuppetMeets including going through the extend queue which I didn't even know existed, and is filled with posters that are, very Muppet.

Podfest was the next event and was a lot of fun. Podfest is a chance for podcasters to meet their suscribers and each other. There were about 30+ podcasters there and a lot of good conversation. This was held at a restaurant that served beer, which only added to the fun. I have listened to some of the big disney podcasts for years and it was great to put faces to the voices I've listened to forever.

It was a busy day at the studios (Toy Story Mania was at least 60 minutes all day) but I got on the rest of the rides. The upcoming American Idol Experiance actually has a pretty cool looking exterior, and from the outside appeared to be ready to open any day now.

Once night fell it was time for the Osborne Festival Of Dancing Lights which is another one that has to be seen to be believed. The large scale dancing segments were mesmerizing, but the display had a lot of little touches like bikes covered in lights and plenty of hidden mickeys. One thing, I bought a souvenir cup filled with Hot Apple Cider and it was awful. The cider was boiling hot and tasted like pee........... I recommend avoiding it if your at the studios.

After the lights it was back to Carribean Beach for a much needed good night sleep.

But before long it was up for Day 3 at EPCOT. I grabbed a ride on Soarin' & Living With The Land before heading over to the Beach Club for the Mega Mouse Meet. The Mega Mouse Meet is the 'main event' of MouseFest, it is in a big convention hall and has lots of tables from podcasters, authors, advertisers and websites. There are lots of giveaways and raffles at the meet, I didn't win anythingn but had fun.

I caught a ride on the Universe Of Energy with some of the guys from The DPN, it is one of the more boring attractions at WDW.

One of the highlights of the afternoon from me was watching the World Showcase Players. Does this guy look familiar:

That is my favorite performer from the old Adventurers Club and he was absolutely hilarious in his role at EPCOT. He was in a heavily guest interaction re-telling of A Christmas Carol. He noticed a few of us MouseFesters in the crowd that rememberred him from his old role, and promptly gave the club salute and a hearty Kungaloosh. The actor played many differnt roles including Marley & the three ghosts. The best laugh came when he was the third visiting ghost, but instead of 'The Ghost Of Christmas Future' he had a Mickey Mouse hand puppet behind a screen and was 'The Ghost of ChristMOUSE Future' and proclaimed "Think its expensive now, just wait. Its going to be fifty dollars for parking, one hundred dollars for a hamburger and there going to close everything you love!" which had a high level of signifigance coming from the former Professor Otis T Wren. Good show, I highly recommend.

Now I have no idea why they were there, but the guys from Deadliest Catch were signing autographs in the Norway pavillion.

They were very cool down to earth guys and were laughing when I told them of our old Deadliest Catch drinking game we would play back in college when we'd drink every time anyone on the show said 'Crab' or 'Pot'.

After dinner things got really fun. I drank halfway around the world including listening to The Hat Lady piano player for a while in the Rose & Crown pub. I probably had a good 6-7 drinks before Illuminations, which had a special Christmas tag which was spectacular.

Then it was off to the Jellyrolls Dueling Piano Bar meet. This place was a lot of fun and is definetely the bar on disney property now that they closed PI. I got really drunk that night as well, I went in with a pretty good buzz and just drank drank drank. And since it was a piano bar there was plenty of booze inspired singing along from the MouseFesters in attendence, which included some very popular podcasters. This was the drunkest I been in a long time and my memory of the latter half of the evening is spotty at best. I do remember meeting some very cool people ......... and I think the piano player actually played and encouraged a drunken singalong of "Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow". Great Night.

That night was great, the next morning was complete hangover hell. The Magic Kingdom is no place to be hungover. Sunday was kind of a finish up day for me at MouseFest. I met my In The Loop Co-Host Erik Yates for lunch over at the Spectacular Wilderness Lodge.

The only real meet I did on Sunday was Ricky Brigante's Inside The Magic meet. I have met Ricky a few times now, cool guy. This was I think the first time I was ever actually on the riverboat.

Saturday & Sunday, they had a great sale going on including 40% of all T Shirts. I ended up buying four, three by choice and the 'Grumpy' long sleeve I was wearing in the picture above with the deadliest catch guys to avoid freezing at EPCOT, it gets colder then you'd think in Florida December.

MouseFest came to an end for me around 4:30ish for me and the depression hit as soon as I left the magic kingdom that afternoon. I actually was on my Magical Express ride home with a fellow MouseFester who I ended up chatting with until it was time to board the plan. It was those kind of friendships and conversations that really make MouseFest as much fun as it is. I met sooo many people and made sooo many friends. A great time, you can be sure that I will be at MouseFest 2009.

iPhone Pictures Take #1

So ever since I got the iPhone I been using the camera feature to take pictures of things I found neat, here are a few:

This was an actual 'Decoration' we found at some hole in the wall bar we went to in Williamsburg the night before BGE. Remember "Don't Turn Your Back On The Wolfpack".

A Mango Margarita. I usually enjoy frozen booze, this one wasn't so great.

I think I must have been drunk after a night out in Chicago when I took this, cause I have no memory of doing so.

I thought this was one of the funnier cutouts I've ever seen.

Large stuffed bear in one of the shops at LaGaurdia airport.

Bass Pro Shop, a fun store.

I've never heard of this movie, but the banner was huge and humorous.

Legoland Discovery Center PTR

So a couple of weekends ago I went to check out the Legoland Discovery Center here in the Chicagoland area. The attraction is essentially a small indoor legoland. While definetely intended for children, I enjoyed the mini-park. The admission is $20 and I was there for about an hour and a half. The level of theme and detail throughout the attraction was surprisingly good.

Some of the features included:

- Mini-land
- Jungle Expedition
- Dragon Ride
- Lego Factory Tour
- Lego Hall Of Fame
- Spellbreaker 4-D Movie

The first section of the Legoland Discovery Center is Mini-Land. It was a giant cityscape of Chicago done completely in Lego form. The detail in this section was really spectacular. The trains actually ran on the tracks and the Navy Pier Ferris Wheel rotated. The model also has two mode, day mode and night mode with all the building lit up. Some of the great little details included during the night scene one of the office buildings had certain rooms lit up so it would spell "GO CUBS" and another cool feature was a little Lego Batman on top of the Sears Tower.

The next section of the attraction was the Jungle Expedition which was a highly themed jungle section with all sorts of Lego safari animals. Here are some of the cooler displays from this part:

The next section was the Lego Hall Of Fame, which was pretty much pop culture icons in Lego form. This was a very popular spot for people to take pictures with the figures. I think Darth Vader was my favorite.

The next part of the tour was my favorite in Legoland and that was of course the Dragon Ride. This is a dark ride that was better then I expected. All of the animatronics (anything from monks, to wizards, to dragons, to gaurds like in the second picture) that had limited motion and of course were made of Legos. Not to fear all you inquiring readers, I got a full on ride video of the short dark ride for the podcast.

Next up was the Spellbreaker 4-D Movie. This was quick 15 minute film which none of the characters had speaking parts and the animation was surpisingly well done. The 4-D effects (by the way have I ever mentioned on this blog about how I hate the term "4-D Movie", the fourth dimension is time and no movie with glasses takes you through time) were decent and included projections on the wall and a neat snow effect. The movie wasn't Disney/Universal quality, but was generally entertaining.

The Lego Factory Tour was one part of the attraction that really had no appeal to me whatsoever. It was pretty much kids pressing buttons in a stylized Lego factory.

The last part was a small scale SpongeBob exhibit. I thought the SpongeBob sculpture was great, but the Squidward & Mr.Crabs looked awful.

So thats the Legoland Discovery Center, a neat little place. If anyone has any questions about it or my afternoon their, post them in the comments section!!

A Distubing Trend

So last week this video of the Poseidons Fury attraction at Islands of Adventure in its current form without its famous water vortex effect hit the internet, I got to thinking. Why exactly was the highlight of the attraction turned off? My mind then got to thinking about how this was similar to the current status of Expedition Everest where the incredible Yeti animatronic has been stuck in B show mode since mid-summer.

In my opinion the water vortex and 'A Show' Yeti are two of the best effects in all of Orlando, and right now neither one is operating. The Yeti is rumored to be down because the base of structure is cracked and can no longer support the force of the massive animatronics thrust (if you remember any of the press around the opening of Everest, they couldn't go a few sentences without mentioning "The Yeti Has The Force Of A 747" which has apparentely come back to bite them in the ass). The rumors around the demise of the Poseidon Vortex aren't great and I've heard anything from budget cuts to resort wide infrastructure upgrades.

The depressing part about the Yeti which according to reports would need a significant rehab to fix, has no such rehab scheduled. I have to think that with the reports circulating on just how bad the tourism is going to get in central florida (see Disney's "Buy 4 Get 3 Free Promotion" or Jim Hill's Report That Disney World Only Has A 35% Occupancy Rate For January). That I could see neither of these effects being fixed for quite some time and wonder if some other pricey effects could be on there way out as budget cuts continue (I am thinking Mummy's Roof Fire or Great Movie Ride's Exploding Buiding).

While the theme park nerd like myself or all you wonderful blog readers are upset over these thing, I have to wonder if John Q Public would think any differentely of these rides with the effects they never knew existed were turned off.

The End Of The Classic Water Ride

So today I was sitting in my desk as my brain floated away from work and into the happy world of Amusement Parks and for some reason I got to thinking about water rides. Now let me start off by saying I have never been a big water rides guy, I enjoy a good log flume, but don't tend to enjoy a shoot the chutes that provides little entertainment besides drenching you in dirty stinky park water. I hate the idea of walking around in wet clothes/shoes all day and especially when I am carrying the AWITP camera/video gear. While thinking of the water rides, I began to realize just how many have been removed in the last 3 seasons or so. I broke out my notebook and came up with this list.

LOG FLUMES
Riptide, Six Flags Great Adventure
Log Flume, Six Flags New England
White Water Landing, Cedar Point
Log Flume, Valleyfair
Wild Thornberrys Flume, Carowinds (***RUMORED***)

SHOOT THE CHUTES
Movietown Water Effect, Six Flags Great Adventure
Splashwater Falls, Six Flags Great America
Mile High Falls, Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom
Tidal Wave, Six Flags St.Louis (***Rumored***)

RAPIDS
Congo River Rapids, Hersheypark

Now out of all those rides, I have been on quite a few and the only one I really really liked was the Hershey Rapids (great ride). I would have to assume parks are removing these rides because they are all older attractions & probably have a large amount of maitenance cost involved in keeping them running. I think this is an interesting trend, as ten years ago you could expect almost all major parks to have a rapids-flume-shootthechutes trio, and now that is becoming a rarity.

While there haven't been rumors other water rides I would put on the 'endangered species' list would be:

SFGAm Log Flumes (There old and not a lot of expansion room at SFGAm)
SFStl Log Flume (Its small and really old looking)
Perillous Plunge (Not a lot of expansion room at Knotts & operational issues)
All remaining Old Six Flags Shoot The Chutes (SFMM, SFoG, SFoT)(just because this has been the trend with the other parks)

Its not all gloom and doom for the water park ride lovers as there is a next generation of water rides on the horizon. A lot of parks seem to be adding the Splash Battle attractions, which can probably be decent rides with the appropriate level of theming. There is also the new series of 'Super Flume' which would be like Pilgrims Plunge opening at Holiday World next year.

So what do you people think? Am I on to something with the 'end of an era' or am I just waaaaaay too bored?

Four Out The Door

Well todays announcement that Cypress Gardens will close all its rides & animal attractions, and return next march as the traditional park + gardens makes it the fourth park to operate in 2008 that will not operate in 2009, the list includes:

Cypress Gardens
Celebration City
Hard Rock Park
Astroland

I don't know why but this most recent one got me a little bit depressed. I have never been to Cypress Gardens & will probably never go, if I were to go I'd probably be more interested in the famous gardens then the small collection of carnival style rides. I think what made me depressed was the fact that I thought this was the right direction for the park to be a mixed bag of animals-rides-slides-gardens. I'm sure you will see some of the coasters & flats pop up at other parks (I really hope they do keep operating the Starliner & Island In The Sky, as I think those would fit in well). I don't think its any coincidence that the central Florida amusement park is closing its doors Sunday and the entire amusement industry will be in Orlando the next day for IAAPA (ie, the people that will be buying the used rides just put on the market).

I think even though the land will be used for something else, that the Ozark Wildcat will probably operate again at the same plot of land. Maybe if they went to a nighttime shopping/dinning area with the wooden coaster as the marquis attraction, that could be sucessful. Or hell, what aquarium couldn't use a nice GCI.

Astroland is the closing park that I care about the least. Coney Island is a dump in a bad part of NY. I wouldn't want to be there after dark. The Cyclone will continue to operate, which is the important one. While I'm not sure if any of 'Thor Equities' grand plans for Coney Island will ever actually develope, I would rather give them a shot at a possibility then whats there now.

I've blogged about Hard Rock Park numerous times and still feel the same way: I called the closing & would have liked to try Nights In White Satin & Bohemian Rhapsody Fireworks.

While I think the collapsing economy was a contributing factor in the closing of most of these places, I think it just quickened the inevitable.

If you add 2007 defunct parks of Geauga Lake & Wild West World that would be 6 parks in 2 years closing the doors. But what is the reason. There were parks that changed long time parks to something that wasn't profitable (Geauga/Cypress), there were "If You Build It No One Will Come" (Wild West/HRP), a park in the way of progress (Astroland), and a Nighttime only Amusement Park that didn't pan out (Celebration). I think if you look at all of them it proves just how hard it is to open a new park or an old park marketed as a new park.

Maybe its just consolidation of the industry or natural selection weeding out the weak, but whatever it is there are less parks then the year before and less then the year before that. Now to end this depressing blog with a depressing quote someone told me last week:

"Things Are Always Darkest Before They Go Completely Black"

I'm Going To Mousefest

So I booked my hotel this past weekend to make it official that I will be attending MouseFest 2008. MouseFest is the big time gathering of Disney Internet Fan Community at Walt Disney World. I have never been to the meet and am really looking forward to going (who wouldn't be excited to go to WDW). I am going to be staying at the Carribean Beach Resort and it was really tough to get a reservation, I been checking for a while and the resort has been completely booked. Almost all of the big time Disney World Websites/Podcasts are there and I am looking forward to meeting some of the podcasters I been listening to for years and maybe even meet some of you down there!!

Seasons End

Well folks, unfortunately it is November 3rd and that means to all of us that call seasonal parks home, coaster season is no more. Its never a fun part of the year, but one when we can all look back on the great memories made in the season gone by and prep for the offseason. Here are some of my favorite memories from the 08 season:

#300
It was Saturday in September at Six Flags St. Louis when I climbed to an all new level of nerd status and rode Evel Knevel, my 300th roller coaster. Thats a pretty big milestone and I can't even believe I have been on that many. Well heres to the next 300!!

SFGAdv with the fam
Now that I graduated college and am out in the real world and half way across the country from home, it made this latest of the hundred times I been to Six Flags Great Adventure specail. I don't get to see my mom/dad/brother very often so it was nice to spend a day hanging out together in one of the premier coaster parks in the country. Mom & Dad haven't been to the park in forever and actually really enjoyed El Toro (so smooth, so smooth).

The Final Hoopla
Probably my most memorable weekend I had this season was when Pleasure Island & The Adventurers Club shut it doors for the last time. The weekend was packed full of specail moments at a true one of a kind place. The folks at the Adv Club did a great job on the final night and made sure that anyone in the building wouldn't soon forget that evening. Kungaloosh.

The Unique Wisconsin Dells
I spent my first weekend ever in Wisconsin Dells and that is one unique little place. A true tourist trap town, but one I enjoyed thouroughly. The big name coasters of Hades & Avalanche lived up to the hype. The touristy trap stuff also lived up to what you would expect from the cool (Wizard Quest) to the awful (the Looney Bin) to the have to seen to be believed odd (Top Secret).

This Is Halloween (4X)
I got the chance to check out four different parks halloween events this year: Magic Kingdom's Mickey Not So Scary Halloween Party, Six Flags Great America's Fright Fest, Cedar Point's Halloweekends and Busch Gardens Europe's Hallowscream. I have good memories from all of the events like walking around the magic kingdom in full costume trick or treating and the incredible Boo To You parade, the always enjoyable Love At First Fright Show, walking around a pirate themed Millenium Force island, to the awesome Monster Stomp show and haunted houses of BGE. I think Not So Scary was my favorite, pretty much cause I am a big wuss and don't enjoy haunted houses, but also it gave a real feeling of being a kid again walking around in costume stopping around the park filling the bag with candy.

So 2008 has been a lot of fun (and its not over quite yet, check out the blog on Tuesday to see where I am going in December, hint it rhymes with HouseBest). The offseason could be an interesting one with some big stories to watch like: how the faltering economy will effect the parks, the construction of the 2009 'Big 3' (Manta, Rip Ride Rockit & Dimondback) and the million dollar question of what will become of Hard Rock Park. Should be a fun offseason after an blast in 2008.

Erik The McMuffin

So this past weekend 3/4 of the In The Loop Podcast Crew went to VA for a weekend of coaster riding. The one that couldn't make it was Erik Yates, we missed Erik on the trip so much so we decided to replace him with a McMuffin wrapper. Here are some pictures of Erik The McMuffin on some of his adventures this weekend.

Here is Erik with a Jackhammering Grover (at the BGE Sesame Street Land construction zone).

Erik in front of some little kids in line.

Erik on the swings.

Erik being held by little kids in the foam pit at KD, shortly before being ripped apart.

PTR Cedar Point Halloweekends

This past weekend I got the chance to visit Cedar Point during its annual Halloweekends event, it was a lot of fun.

My weekend at the point began on Friday Night entering the park at about 8:30 to find very light crowds, which was just what I needed after a four hour drive following a eight hour work day. I have never been to the park on a Halloweekends Friday, they run a skeleton lineup of attractions featuring only the headliners. None of the rides had long waits besides Maverick, which even with the light crowds still was about an hour. I got some great night rides on Millenium Force & Top Thrill Dragster. Friday night was also when I got my ride on MaxAir, this is the first time in my last three trips to CP that MaxAir was open and it is a really fun ride. I love both MaxAir & Skyhawk, does any other park have a better 1-2 punch the Cedar Point?? The crowd on Friday was a lot more adults and teens then kids. I grabbed some Mcdonalds on the way back to the hotel.

I got to the point early on Saturday, because Platinum Passholders get in an hour early. I parked at the Soak City gate, because I knew that early entry was the only time of the weekend I would probably be able to get on Maverick. The crowd at rope drop was pretty large, this was my first sign that it would be a busy day. I was part of the 'mad dash' to Maverick and was in the front row one of the first trains out of the day. Maverick I find to be a highly overrated ride, I don't know if it is the CP Fanboys in denial, but thats a rough ride. The stupid over the shoulder restraints that do nothing as far as securing the rider, I slam my head into them on all of the sharp twists and turns. By the time I got off and looked at the line it was over an hour......... this was going to be a busy day.

I hit up Dragster for the first ride of the day and it was much fun. I really didn't ride too much on Saturday as the crowds were insane, for example even some of the points lesser rides (Mantis & Demon Drop) had full queue's. I don't know anyone who would wait 1.5-2 hours for those.

I rode the train, for what I think must of been for the first time ever, because I never knew the very cool BoneVille display existed. On the part of the ride from the back of the park to the front they have a whole bunch of neat old west displays with animated skelton figures in different scenes.

I also ate at Cedar Points buffet the Midway Market or 'Mid-Evil Market' during Halloweekends and I really liked it. The price was high but not awful at $17, but lets face it at a Cedar Fair park you can't get a burger/fries/coke for less then $12 so this is a value by comparison. The buffet which included drinks had a very large variety of food (ham, tater tots, chicken nuggets, pasta meatballs, nacho/taco bar, large selection of desserts, mashed potatoes, stuffing, fried chicken). I completely recommend this to someone visiting the park, it also provides a nice relaxing break mid-day.

Since it was so busy on Saturday I saw many of CP's Halloweekends shows, here are my thoughts on each of them:

Monster Midway Invasion Celebration Parade
This was a pretty good parade for a non-disney park. Not many parks outside the mouse house do parades, so thats always is nice to see. They have a decent number of floats and a lot of cool costumes. Some of the floats are falloons, which some are animatronics (one of which is the rockman that can be seen in the awesomely bad Wisconsin Dells tourist trap Top Secret).

Chris Linn's MagiComedy
This was in the small indoor theater near the parks entrance. The comedy was good, the magic....... not so much.

Night Of Darkness
Nothing really halloween related about this one, just a large band of dressed up people playing rock music. This actually was my favorite show because the band was good, the crowd got into it and this show was in the saloon, so there was BEER!!

Graveyard Shift With The Goodtime Ghouls
This is your average people dressed up as zombies dance around to monster mash and thriller theme park halloween show. This was in the large indoor theater and really wasn't very good. The only redeming factor was some of the chicks were hot and in skimpy outfits often throughout the show.

A Trio Of Terror
This was a dramatic reading of Edgar Allen Poe poems in the small theater near Mean Streak. A very simple show, and well done.

During the day I also spent a good amount of time in the giant arcade Cedar Point has, this thing is awesome. You can win some good prizes and not spend to much cash on games.

Normally I am a huge wuss when it comes to haunted houses/scare zones, but I was really interested in seeing some of them. So I did just what Pat McCabe would do and that is hit the bar, pound some beers and build up the liquid courage I needed!! I made it through all 5 scare zone (I didn't feel like waiting in line for the houses). He
