Weekly Topic: From Movie to Ride
Written by Eric
Monday, 19 May 2008

The Weekly Topic is back! For this week I ask the question: What movie do you want to see turned into a ride?

The Life Aquatic. If you’ve seen the movie, you’d know that it is full of fun, color, and great music. These attributes are always good for a great ride.

For those of you that don’t know, The Life Aquatic is a story of Steve Zissou, played by Bill Murray , as he tries to hunt down the illusive Jaguar Shark. The story is similar to Moby Dick as Captain Ahab searches for the white whale, but the movie is similar to a Jacques Cousteau film. The Life Aquatic incorporates live action, stop animation, and other fantasy elements.

In other words, The Life Aquatic is not your typical movie. It has fun, color, and great music, a perfect fit for an amusement park ride. Since the movie is very aquatic oriented, it could make for a great water ride. Perhaps a water coaster or even an Intamin Aqua Trax.

By combining dark ride elements with a coaster, The Life Aquatic could offer a great ride. The awesome music would also add a great layer to the ride.

The Simpsons Ride at Universal Studios Florida and Hollywood are now open! The flood of new ride openings continue as Universal unveiled their new Simpsons themed rides. The initial reviews are saying that the actual ride is not spectacular, but the queue and preshow are very creative and a great tribute to The Simpsons.

You can view photos of the Orlando version at Universal Insider and the Hollywood version at Theme Park Review.

Thunderhawk at Michigan’s Adventure is now open! The Vekoma SLC coaster was once located at Geauga Lake before being relocated to Michigan’s Adventure. While it is just a standard SLC, the landscaping under the ride is pretty slick and the station is just awesome.

You can view photos of the ride at Michigan’s Adventure’s website or view a video from the local news.

The Dark Knight coaster at Six Flags Great Adventure is now open! The new indoor wild mouse coaster looks to be an exiting step forward, theming wise, for Six Flags. The Dark Knight takes an already fun wild mouse coaster and makes it better with the theming. The lighting effects and preshow also make this coaster stand out.

Hopefully a highly themed coaster like this will make its way out to a west coast Six Flags park in 2009.

Ravine Flyer II at Waldameer Park is set to open on Saturday, May 17th. GoErie.com has a front row, point of view video of the new Gravity Group wooden coaster. I find it interesting the way a Gravity Group wooden coaster has yet to go into a corporate park, so far just independents. Hopefully we’ll see some more of these unique wooden coasters at more parks in 2009.
